Some of the crew members are believed to be killed or injured. Life boats and Soviet rescue vessels were spotted in the area of northern Norway where the submarine was earlier on the surface and on fire. The submarine itself was not seen and Norwegian military spokesman says there is reason to believe the submarine has sunk. A White House spokesman here in Washington also says the submarine has been lost. U.S. official says they understand that some of the submarine's nearly 100 estimated crew members have been killed. The U.S. government has expressed its sympathy to the Soviet Union for any loss of life. The submarine which has experienced an underwater accident is one of the newest Soviet attack vessels. There is no indication of any radio active leaks from the Soviet submarine's nuclear power system or for many nuclear missiles that may have been on board. The soviet sent assurances to western governments that the submarine will not leak radiation. In Washington, Soviet ambassador, Yuri Dobrynin told the States Department that the possibility of explosion or radio activity is excluded. Nevertheless, the Norwegians are reportedly to be taken water and air samples for testing. Their casual estimate is said to be based on air-borne observations of the rescue site 500 kilometers off shore. The Soviet news agency, TASS quotes Defense Minister, Dimitrii Yazov, as saying the sound nuclear reactors were shut down before it sank in 1,500 meters of water. He said the crew tried unsuccessfully for several hours to extinguish off fire on board.
