>"What did you do last weekend?"

‘Everything will be all right.’

次の問題は、『だから言ったじゃないか。』です。どのような状況で言うのかによって
様々英語に訳せると思います。おもしろい訳があったら教えてください。

Thank you for your kindness. I was really surprised at your response, because
you had wriiten it in English. So I imagined that you were American or non-
Japanese. And I realized it's not because of it but your computer's keyboard.

It doesn't matter whether you write in Japanese or not. Please tell me more
about your experiences of education. I like to write in English, because
writing in English can train myself to master better English.

Why don't you write in English? I think using English is more communicative
than using Japanese. And ,what is more, that's more constructive.

I'm looking forward to reading your response written in English.

EXPRESSION IS NOT FITTED WITH SO CALLED SPEECH LEVEL" WHICH MEANS
ABILITY OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

THIS USAGE,HOWEVER WOULD NOT BE ALMOST ACCEPTED FOR JAPANESE OR
NON-ENGLISH.
THEN, WHAT SHALL WE SAY IN ANOTHER EXPRESSION FOR JAPANESE?

ANOTHER EXPRESION,

AS TO ENGLISH COMPOSITION OR『英作文』, I FEEL DIFFICULT THAT
STUDENTS CAN USE RIGHT ENGLISH WHEN THEY ARE FREE TO WRITE BY

THEY ARE RIGHT OR NOT. IN OTHER BOARD, SOME PEOPLE ARE STILL DEBA

WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT OUR ENGLISH ARE HARDLY SAME AS NATIVE

   To Mr.Goroma from Sunrize

I'm very sorry for my poor English. Now I'm working as an English teacher,
but I was discouraged a little bit after reading your response. Because my
English was so bookish that you couldn't understand it.
One thing I'd like to tell you is that my English has been influenced with
the English that I'm teaching. Most of English teachers have no time to read
English books and listen to English expressions spoken by natives. That's
why we can teach only how to write grammatically in English to make students
pass the entrance exams of high school. But I know that I need to learn from
natives.

Thank you for your correction of my mistakes. I could correct my knowledge of
English expressions. But I don't care so much about mistakes, because I always
make mistakes even when I speak Japanese. That's doesn't mean that I hate to
be corrected by someone. What I really mean is that it's a lot of fun for me
and you to communicate with each other in other language.I agree with your
opinion that English written or spoken by Japanese should be checked
by natives. And I think that what is more important is to enjoy using English
without any fears of mistakes.I hope somebody who can check our English will
join our discuss. Do you know anyone? If you do, please tell him or her to
join this.
Please forgive and forget about my mistakes.I'm going to try to use English
better than I did before.

                 See you later,Sunrize

P.S One of the important points is what you want to say rather than how to say.

 Hello, Mr. Sunrize

This is Goroma. Thank you for your responce. As your writings

once again during my work. Since I am not confident about
English, I do not intend to correct it directly except apparent
 mistake.
Would you please let me get away with it in case of my impolite-

Including me, on the stage of education, we have a problem that
what is real English. When I sometimes talk to a neighbor from
Asian in English, I realy understand what he says. However, I
had hardly comprehended English from European(French) on my first
time. I supporse that the European English is a little bit
 different from that we know.

In last week before, I did not catch a simple word friend" on
a phone from France. I was not able to understand the word as
friend but fond". At last, I had to ask the spelling.

I regret, for all my exprience, which is very limited, also do
not know any native person whom I ask to check our English.
Although we do not have condition enough to learn live English,
let us continue to write here in English, not fearing even
misusage. Only to continue to write English is to improve our
English. Do not you think that we learn each other, do yo?

  To Mr.Goroma.

I've just read your responce, and I'm very glad about your suggestion that
we should talk in English to learn better English. Let's keep using English,
  shall we?

One thing that I want to tell you is that you don't need to care so much
about your usage of English. I don't and won't criticize your mistakes of
English, even if they are absolutely wrong. Because I want to know a lot
about yourself as a human-being who can make mistakes. Making mistakes is
the only thing that we, human-being, can do and computers can't. We are
more creative and imaginative than computers. That's why we can program
  and operate them.

Having read the article written by Peter Milward, I realize that there is
something funny and ironical in it. It has made me laugh. And I remember
that I've ever read a few books written by him since I was a college student.
Have you ever read many books written by him? Could you choose the one of
  them, which is your favorite?

Let me turn back to the topic about English composition.
I'd like to know how to teach it to students. Please tell me about it,
if you had any experiences of it. However it is, it can help me anyway.

                          See you later, Goroma.

My dear friend, Sunrize(I hope you do not mind if I call such a way.)

I was very pleased to read your wormest responce.

As your suggestion, I still continue to write in English.
While we use English, I will improve my English without a fear of
mistakes. For the time being, I am sensitive about my mistakes.
In other board of training.sci(5-1249), I wrote the progress of
English conversation must be influenced by his character. Therefore,
my English ability does not makes advances slowly due to my charact-
 er.

As to Peter Milward(thanks for your right spelling), I knew his
statement in only a quotation by Michihiro Matsumoto.( Kangaeru Eigo
" Asahi shuppan) You are right in your writing that his statement
is funny and ironical. Sorry that I can say now because of my read-
 ing them in Matsumoto's only.

To return to the original subject,

In your writings, I am realy interested in how to improve our Eng-
lish. In other words, this is related to how to teach it
(better English language) to students. Do you think so?

In my school ages, we bored a class of English composition. But I
 wonder why?

I am not sure about the reason. If you do not mind my correctness,
of my remenber, I will write in following.
That may be that my doubt whether my English is right or not.
Nobody told me if my writing is able to understand. What I wrote in
English is only to replace some words in a sentence of textbook
゚ (so called patten practice). That is not communication as a language.

Was I able to speak with them? Did I write my opinion? It is no".
If I can write right English languege, I must be able to make myself
 understood in English.

Since you have to teach English language including the composition,
I will also concern this subject as possible as I can.

Questions; 1. Before children write in English, why do they read
                easy books more?

        2. Why do they translate Japanese to English?
Who tells the difference between Japanese and
English. There is a difference though we think
it same meaning in both of them.

        3. I wonder if the textbook for school were written
with real native English while reading my textbooks
for junior high school(New Prince Readers 2.3)
Please do not take what I say a negation of English
                education for school.

        4. Is the examinaiton English current English
                or live one?

I suppose if a teacher is limited by many conditions. And also,
I did not become a teacher due to any reasons, but would like to
think them over from out of the side.

I will appear here in next week or sooner than that.

For the time being, I remain,
                 Yours ever,

Thanks a lot for your agreement, Goroma.(Please allow me to call you
"Goroma") I'm really happy about your understanding of my massage and your
corporation. I think that language is just like tools to make something
with. Whatever you make, you have to use some tools. And if you hadn't used
them a lot, you couldn't have made what you wanted to make.
Supposing that you make a chair with a hammer and have never used a
hammer before, maybe you can't make as a good chair as a carpenter. Because
you don't get used to it. The first time you use a hammer, you hit your
finger many times. But after that you automatically hit a nail without
shouting "OUCH!". Isn't that the process of self-improvement?

Now let's discuss the subject and your questions.
In your response you asked me if how to improve our English has something
with how to teach it to students. I guess you're quite right. I wouldn't
think that most of English teachers are enthusiastic about the improvement
of their English, because the current English education hasn't yet been
effective enough to train students to master it perfectly without any
difficulty. This proves that they wouldn't know how to learn it effectively.
Otherwise they could teach it effectively. So I wouldn't mind if you're
more interested in "how to improve your English".

Then I would like to answer your qustions as precisely as I can.

>Questions; 1. Before children write in English, why do they read
                easy books more?

Isn't this question "Why don't teachers let children read more easy books
before writting in English?"? If so, I would say that the way you suggested
is the most effective one but the most difficult one to teachers.
Because, as I said above here, most of English teachers are lazy about
self-improvement and they don't try to read English books by themselves.
Could you imagine that Japanese teachers don't try to read Japanese books?
This is very strange and surprizing to me. I've read Japan Times since
May of this year. And sometimes read Newsweek. That's because my English
ability has become worse since I started to teach. It is unbelivable, isn't
it? The more I teach, the worse my English ability becomes. And I could
realize that what I'm teaching is not English to communicate with but
tactics to pass the entrance exams of high school. Therefore the English
education for the latter purpose couldn't have been effective for the
improvement of communication with people. What is more, the English taught
for that purpose is like a system of mathematics or a game of computers.
How could we change this strange education system? As far as it exists,
this kind of English will survive and keep children away from communicating
  with people in English.

        2. Why do they translate Japanese to English?
Who tells the difference between Japanese and
English. There is a difference though we think
it same meaning in both of them.

You're right. This kind of differnce is just like the differnce between
a cliche, which means "kotowaza" in Japanese, and its meaning. This metaphor
isn't the best one but the better one. What I mean is that we, as the 20th-
century-born-people(I should have said `Japanese born in the 20th century),
couldn't know the real meaning of a cliche without living in the socity where
it was created. For example, you might know that "nasake wa hito no tame
narazu". This is a very popular cliche in Japan but few Japanese know its
exact meaning. Those who understand it negatively wouldn't help any people
in trouble, but they're wrong. Because the right meaning is that we should
help anyone in trouble not for them but for us. But I couldn't blame them
for that reason. You might say that they should be blamed for the benefit
of themselves. I could do if they have lived in the society where the cliche
had started to be used among the people.
The explanation of the metaphor has been too long to reach the conclusion of
my answer. I hope you will follow my thinking. I would like to say that
those, including myself, who has never lived in the country where English
is used couldn't exactly know the meanings of English. And this doesn't
mean that we should permit them to teach English even if they don't know
the differnce. What I'd like them to do is trying to know it as possible as
they can. And also I'd like to suggest that the Japanese education ministry
should take the students who want to become English teachers to the country
where English is used. This plan must be done for a long period.

        3. I wonder if the textbook for school were written
with real native English while reading my textbooks
for junior high school(New Prince Readers 2.3)
Please do not take what I say a negation of English
                education for school.

I've read about that somewhere in a cirtain book, whose name I forgot. Some
native English's names must be on the last page of the textbook. But I
wouldn't belive that they are crazy about the reform of the current English
textbook. Because most of members are Japanese and they hardly refuse
what the Japanese education ministry demand to correct the textbook. Even if
they think they are right, they wouldn't express themselves honestly because
of the strong power that the Japanese burocracy has. There might be the self
-defence between both of them. But this effect has caused the present result
of the English education. Would you think that the relation of the two will
become better for us and children?

        4. Is the examinaiton English current English
                or live one?

As I've presented before, I would think the English taught in most of schools
are taught not for communication but for exams. One of the reason is that
it is easy for teachers to teach and analyze students' achievement of English
learning. Could you imagin that the English teacher who don't speak English
as well as natives try to analyze students' speaking abilities? It might be
  some kind of science-fiction drama.

In my lessons I usually tell my students that the Engish you've studying
since the first grade of juior high school is as easy as a role playing game
you've played at home, so you don't have to commit yourselves to it as
seriously as you've studied. Because the role playing game has its small
system made by human-beings. The way to reach the goal is that you have to
take any items you'll use later. Otherwise you 'll be dead or you must go
back to where you can take items you need. I'd like to tell both students and
parents that it's not necessary for them to be too serious to think about the
whole world. We are not ants which only work for their queen but not for
themselves. We are able to percieve the whole world by thinking. We are able
to think about ourselves and others. That's the proof of human-beings.
That's also the result of development of sience. We as learners of universe
should be gamers of the universal system including the system of Japanese
education. I'd like to conclude that students who are smarter than ex-
students enjoy the present game of education and take any items you use in
  the future.

Thank you very much for your reading my long answers. I hope you'll undestand
my messages in them. If you don't, would you tell me what it means? I'll
try to use more understandable expressions.

I'm looking forward to your constructive opinions.

By the way how have you been for a while? Have you been anywhere for a change
(which means "kibun-tenkan") or for your bussiness? Anyway I guess you could
  have a good time there.

                           See you again,Goroma.

   Dear Sunrize,

If we write in Japanese, I guess if some persons may criticize
your responce. I did not knew you were critical of English
education and the system. I am afraid that we outsider criticize
    them easily.

Please kindly understand my statement. I do not mean to hurt you

   My points to your correspondence.

Language is not like tools, such as a hammer.
What do we make with language? To learn a language is not same
as to learn hitting nail nor to make a chair.
To learn a language is a purpose of communication.
Self-improvement is not to learn hitting nail but to get better
oneself. We call it learning (学習)" in the psychologic words.

   1.
What means the current English education hasn't yet been effec-
tive enough to train students to master it perfectly without any
    difficulty?" 現代英語教育は生徒達にそれを完全にマスターするた
   めに、充分に訓練するのには効果的にはまだ到っていない。???

I do not think that English education is forever effective
enough to master it perfectly. In other words, English education
is not perfect even if native speaker teaches.

I read your criticism for teachers. Frankly,I do not like to cri
ticize. I did not become a teacher. A friends of mine managed to
become a teacher who did not have good marks in Enlish.
Teachers not only teach English but have to take care of his
students' life. With one-side view, we should not criticize the
    ocupation.

Where do you know that teachers is lazy about sefl-improvement?
If it is Soejima's of Yoyogi Yobiko teacher, his opinion is
baiased from out side of educational problems. It is only
    one of opinions.

My question 1st, I do not expect that teachers are criticized
but would like to consider that output as writing follows input
as reading. (Do you remenber Michihiro Matsumoto saying? )

My work does not demand speaking English, only reading Enlish
correspondence. I do not read English newspaper or English text
except on my job. I suddendly found that I was able to make
myself understood in English on my job, even if speaking or call-
ing with foreign people. Please do not take it that my English
   is good enough to communicate.

I do not understand why your English has got worse than when
you became a teacher at first. I suppose if you might be wrong
to blame the present English education for yourself.

   2nd,
Enlish language is English, Jananese language is Japanese.
I would like to state that there is different meaning between
Japanese and English even if a word seems same.

You stated frame of reference (視座構造 )"on my questions 2nd.
You misunderstood the words of cliche, kotowaza, metaphor. All
   three is different.

           * cliche = phrase or idia which is used so often that it
has became stale(too much used and is now out of date
              ) or meaningless.-OALD 4th edition ,explanation in
( ) from OALD published by Kaitakusha 1976
*metaphor=use of a word or phrase to indicate sth differ
ent from (though related in some way to) the literal
            meaning. ─OALD 陰喩 ,暗喩
        *KOTOWAZA= proverb
   『情けは人の為成らず』
   これは、ひろさちや さんに言わせると、縁起思想だそうです。つまり
   、現在の若者には通じないのは、そういう思想の母体がないからです。
   一万人以上の社会では、その証明がつかないから、忘れてしまったそう
   です。

As to my 2nd question, I write examples as following.
   〔PINK〕
The children all looked in the pink after their condition.
                                ---------
       His opinion is pink.
              -----
         両方ともOLD-STYLE な言い方かもしれません。
         ピンク産業とか桃色遊戯なんて言葉はありません。

   〔RAT,MOUSE 〕
I smelt a rat when he started being so helpful.
       ------------ (suspect)

Are you a man or a mounse? (brave or cowrdly)
               -------
         ねずみのように働くって表現ないですね。

When I studied English, we translated 『真っ黒』to real black.
The teacher(native speaker) said it was funny. Black color does
not expresses such way. I was not able to understand it for
   long years.
Now, I can say black as pitch"

   直訳はできないということを言いたいのですが。

   3.
I suppose that English textbooks for school are very limited
from an ordinary way of thinking. A teacher should correct/add
the sentences or stories to the textbooks.

I have read 『私が採点する日本の英語』by Donald Harrington. It
is slightly old. I do not say yes" or no"about his opinion.
Your statement is similar to his. I do not connect a problem
with criticism of the Ministry of Education simply.

   つまり、ネットのなかでは、そうそう簡単には、極端なことを言わない
   ように、私はしているのです。ずるいようですが、長く続けていくコツ
   のような気がするのです。
If you want to criticise in the Net, as your friend,I advise you
to write your opinion only once. Never read your objection.
Otherwise, you have to argue someone. We Japanese can not
debate but are incline to argue. If you prepare the stuff for
argument, you may argue. Additionally, you have to have a
technic to win. It does not matter whether right or wrong.

   4.
I have read your similar opinion in Soejima's(I am not sure).

I do not understand the usage of analyze".
The word means to separate into its parts in order to study its
nature or structure. It must be examine".

Do you ask me that I can believe that a English teacher who can
not speak it examin native speakers' speaking ability together
   with Japanese students' ?

I say yes. Because a teacher even if he can not speak English
well have to treat a menber of Japanese students. He does not
treat native speaker with partiality, if he does not want to
   examin him.
I wonder if I am wrong.

It is said that all our problem on English education originates
in the exam English for University. Before we say so, we have
to checkthe fact. I sometimes solve English exam for共通一次 in
newspaper If the exam is our issue, I wonder why and where it
is a problemI do not know the fact.

In the last, I do not think that we are able to percieve the
whole world by thining. Generally, we are able to percieve the
   world (not whole) by experience.

   余談ですが、もともとは、HUMAN BEING と言うのは、神に対して『人間
   』という言葉だと思います。「経験によって世界を知る」と言うのは、
   経験論と言う哲学上の一つの部門だそうです。私はあまり、こちらの方
   は詳しくありません。人間であることの証明は、難しい論議です。THIN
   KINGでというのは、観念論というのでしょう。人間が人間であることを
   証明というのは、蟻が蟻として自分を証明することと同じぐらい不可能
   なことでは、ないでしょうか。だから神という観念を置かなくてはなら
   ないかもしれません。 (キリスト教徒ではないので、こんな言い方をし
   てしまいます。)

I thank you for your reading.
In the next time, I am expecting something interesting.
   Best regards,

You haven't answered my questions for a month. Nor you made any statements
concerning the problems we were talking about. I think I can take it as your
confession for your being in the wrong on that matter.
I made a mistake in believing your ability for discussion, your honesty, and
your being an English teacher. An English teacher is a person who has, at least,
ability to use it. The ability to teach it is another problem though in any
classroom you as a teacher cannot do without it. Neither of these two conditions
required to a English teacher, as long as I have seen, you deserve.
You have many many many things to do before you teach anyone anything.

 To Mr. Moon and All

Since my wordprocessor was broken, I manage to connect with this line
from our office. I could not understand how to make file of dictionary
 into the computer.

Mr. Moon, why you say such a thing? I said you have to have ヨユウ.

Becuase of mr writing before, you were too severe for Mr. Surize.
I thought that I should have advised you to dissuade.

We have a right to write an opinion as member of Science Net.
A person went away here due to rude words. I did not think that
there was not rule in such way. Please consider by yourself but
not ask me. Mr. Kanrinin also advised you.
